MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding is a welding technique that uses a continuous and consumable wire electrode to join two pieces of metal together. This process is also known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). This versatile technique is widely used by various industries due to its efficiency and its ability to produce high-quality welds on a variety of materials.
Lotus Steel provides quality welds by utilising appropriate techniques and equipment for all our projects.
Important Aspects of the MIG Welding Process at Lotus Steel
Power Source – MIG welding requires a welding power source. This can be either a constant voltage or a constant current power supply.
Wire Electrode – The welding process uses a consumable wire electrode that is fed continuously from a spool through a welding gun. This wire serves as both the electrode and the filler material.
Shielding Gas – A shielding gas, typically a mix of argon and carbon dioxide, is used to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contaminants like oxygen and nitrogen. This shielding gas is released through the welding gun along with the electrode.
Welding Gun – The mig welding gun is the tool through which the electrode wire and shielding gas are fed to the welding area.
Weld Pool Formation – When the trigger is pulled, an electric arc is created between the electrode wire and the workpiece. The heat generated by the arc melts the wire and the workpiece, creating a molten weld pool.
Fusion and Filling – As the molten metal cools, it solidifies and forms a strong bond between the two welded materials. The filler material from the electrode wire contributes to filling any gaps or providing additional material for a strong joint.
Common Metals used in MIG Welding
Below are some of the common metals used in MIG welding at Lotus Steel.
- Carbon Steel – These are alloys made of iron and carbon. Unlike aluminium, using 100%
argon is not required for welding this type of material. Instead, a combination of 75% argon and 25% carbon dioxide is used. Moreover, the easiest material to be welded with MIG is mild steel. Due to the high melting temperature of this form of steel, welders can easily change their welding parameters.
- Aluminium – This type of metal is soft, shiny and non-ferrous. Aluminium requires 100% pure argon gas to weld. It is known to be the most difficult metal to weld in MIG. This is because it has a low melting point and high thermal conductivity.
- Galvanised Steel – This metal has poor weldability. Hence, an experienced and knowledgeable welder should work on this type of material to achieve great results. Additionally, flux-cored wires are required to get satisfactory welds.
Reasons MIG Welding is ideal for your project
Here are some reasons why MIG Welding is suitable for your project.
- One of the main advantages of MIG Welding is the speed of the process. MIG welding is relatively fast compared to other welding methods. Thus, it can result in shorter production times.
- Its finished welds don’t require much cleaning or finishing. Since MIG uses a shielding gas to protect the arc, there is no slag to remove.
- MIG welding is a highly versatile method that can weld a huge range of metals and alloys.
- MIG welding is ideal for joining thin metals.
