Steel Welding

Steel welding is a metal fabrication process that involves joining two or more pieces of steel together by heating them to a point where they melt and then allowing them to cool and solidify, creating a strong bond.

Lotus Steel uses specific steel welding methods and equipment depending on the type of steel, the thickness of the materials, the desired joint strength, and the application.

Arc Welding – This method uses an electric arc to generate the heat required for melting the steel pieces and a filler material (if needed) to join them. There are different types of arc welding, including Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), also known as TIG welding.

MIG Welding – MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding is a type of arc welding that uses a consumable wire electrode and a shielding gas, typically a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide. It is known for its versatility and is commonly used for welding steel and stainless steel.

TIG Welding – TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas, usually pure argon. It is a precise and clean welding process often used for welding thin materials, and in applications where appearance is important.

Oxy-Fuel Welding – This method uses a mixture of fuel gas (e.g., acetylene) and oxygen to create a high-temperature flame to melt the steel. It is commonly used for cutting and welding tasks.

Plasma Arc Welding – Plasma arc welding is similar to TIG welding but uses a more focused arc produced by ionizing a gas. It is often used for high-precision applications and in welding materials like titanium.

  1. Ensure you have a clean and well-ventilated workspace. Remove any flammable materials, and make sure there’s a fire extinguisher nearby.
  2. Remove any dirt, rust, or contaminants on the surfaces of the metal pieces you intend to weld. Properly align and secure the pieces to ensure they stay in place during welding.
  3. Adjust the welding machine settings, including the amperage and electrode polarity, to match the type and thickness of the steel and the electrode you’re using.
  4. Choose the correct welding electrode for your project and insert it into the electrode holder on your welding machine.
  5. Put on your welding helmet, gloves, and other protective gear. Make sure you’re ready to work safely.
  6. With the electrode holder in one hand and a secure grip on the electrode, strike the electrode against the metal to create an electric arc. This arc will melt the tip of the electrode and generate the heat needed for welding.
  7. Hold the electrode at a slight angle (around 10-20 degrees) in the direction of the weld. Move the electrode steadily along the joint while maintaining the correct arc length, which is typically the diameter of the electrode. The molten metal from the electrode will fuse with the workpieces, creating a weld bead.Impact Deck Frame Fabrication
  8. Keep moving the electrode along the joint until you’ve completed the desired length of the weld. You can overlap the weld beads for stronger joints.
  9. After finishing the welding pass, release the electrode and let the welded area cool. Do not touch the hot weld with bare hands.
  10. Once the weld has cooled, inspect it for any defects, such as cracks or incomplete fusion. You can perform visual and non-destructive testing to ensure the quality of the weld.
