Lotus Steel is an expert artisan in TIG Welding fabrication with over 47 years of experience.
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) Welding, also known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), is a welding process wherein a non-consumable tungsten electrode is used to deliver the current to the welding arc. It uses an inert gas, typically argon, to cool down and protect the weld from outside contaminants.
How does TIG Welding Works at Lotus Steel
Here are the steps on how TIG welding works at Lotus Steel.
- The first thing to do is to gather the necessary tools and equipment to be used. A TIG welding machine should include a power source, a welding torch with a tungsten electrode, and a shielding gas supply. The workpiece, often made of materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, or other metals, is also prepared.
- The tungsten electrode which is usually made of pure tungsten, or a tungsten alloy is inserted into the TIG welding torch. The torch also contains a ceramic cup (nozzle) wherein the shielding gas flows to protect the weld area. This inert gas prevents atmospheric contamination of the weld pool.
- Set up the TIG welding machine and adjust it to the appropriate settings according to the material used.
- As the workpiece melts, a molten weld pool is formed. However, the tungsten electrode will not melt and remain stable. This will provide a heat source for the melt base metal.
- The welder can manually introduce a filler rod into the molten weld pool if it needs to bridge gaps in the joint. The filler rod melts and becomes part of the weld.
- As the welding torch moves along the joint, the molten weld pool solidifies, forming a continuous and strong weld bead.
- After completing the tig weld, allow the workpiece to cool. The finished weld should be inspected for any defects. Moreover, additional steps like grinding or polishing may be performed for aesthetic reasons.
Best Metals used for TIG Welding
- Aluminium – This type of metal is the best choice for TIG welding. This is because it allows for precise control and produces high-quality welds.
- Steel – TIG welding is suitable for a few types of steel like carbon steel and alloy steel. TIG welding is also commonly used in various metal fabrication such as automotive production and piping.
- Stainless Steel – When using stainless steel for TIG Welding, it is recommended to use a DC machine to give the electrode negative polarity. In this way, the welder will have better control over heat input. It will also ensure the integrity of the material and minimises distortion.
- Copper – This type of material is easy to weld with TIG welding. However, if there are other alloys in the copper material, then its welding method can be a little different.
Advantages of TIG Welding
Below are some of the advantages of TIG Welding here at Lotus Steel.
- TIG Welding at Lotus Steel produces precise and clean welds. If you are also looking for aesthetically pleasing welds, then TIG welding is right for you.
- As mentioned above, a wide range of metals including aluminium, stainless steel, copper and more can be used for TIG Welding.
- It produces strong welds with good fusion.
- Since TIG Welding produces little splatter, it only requires less post-weld cleanup.
- TIG Welding has precise heat control, making it suitable for welding thick materials.
